Grab hire is faster and usually more cost-effective when you have a large volume of muck, soil, hardcore or mixed site waste in an open area – the grab arm reaches up to 6 metres over walls, fences and hedges to lift waste straight into the lorry. Skip hire is better for smaller, mixed domestic waste, or where you need a container for staged loading over days or weeks.

A standard 8-wheeler grab lorry carries around 16 tonnes of muck-away or hardcore in a single load – roughly the equivalent of three or four builder skips. For bigger projects we can arrange repeat loads in the same day or programme multi-day clearances around your site schedule.

Grab hire prices depend on the type of waste and your postcode. Typical rates: muck or soil removal from £260 + VAT per load, clean hardcore (brick or processed) from £100 + VAT per load, oversize concrete from £140 + VAT per load. Soil, muck, clay, subsoil, clean hardcore (brick, block, broken concrete), oversize concrete blocks, mixed site arisings, and green waste from large garden clearances. Grab hire is not suitable for hazardous waste, asbestos, chemicals, plasterboard or fine waste that would blow or fall off in transit – those need either a specialist skip or a different removal method.

Grab lorries are large 8-wheel vehicles, so you need a stable hardstanding for the lorry to park on with enough overhead clearance (no low-hanging cables or branches). The advantage is the grab arm extends over walls, fences, hedges and into back gardens, so the lorry itself doesn’t need to be next to the waste pile – ideal for tight residential roads where a skip wouldn’t fit.

Most grab hire jobs are scheduled within 24 to 48 hours of booking. Same-day collection may be possible on shorter-notice jobs where a lorry is already in your area. The team can confirm a window when you book – particularly useful if you’re working to a site schedule or need rubble off the road before the end of the working day.

For large volume muck-away, grab hire usually has a lower carbon footprint per tonne removed – one grab load replaces multiple skip exchanges, reducing total vehicle movements. All material is taken to our licensed processing facility where we recycle and recover where possible, including washing and reusing aggregates through our CDE wash plant.
